Miss Saigon 25th Anniversary Gal

Miss Saigon: A Musical Phenomenon Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary

Miss Saigon, one of the most successful and beloved musicals of all time, marked its 25th anniversary with a spectacular gala performance at London's Prince Edward Theatre on September 22, 2014. The event was filmed and broadcasted on BBC2, and later released on DVD and digital platforms.

The gala performance featured the cast of the acclaimed new production of Miss Saigon, which returned to the West End in 2014 after a 15-year absence. The show tells the tragic tale of young bar girl Kim, orphaned by war, who falls in love with an American GI called Chris - but their lives are torn apart by the fall of Saigon.

The highlight of the evening was the appearance of the original stars of Miss Saigon, who joined the new cast for a special finale. Lea Salonga, who won a Tony Award for her portrayal of Kim in 1991, sang "The Movie in My Mind" with Rachelle Ann Go, who played Gigi in the new production. Jonathan Pryce, who also won a Tony Award for his role as The Engineer in 1991, performed "The American Dream" with Jon Jon Briones, who reprised his role as The Engineer from the 2014 revival. Simon Bowman, who played Chris in the original London production, sang "Last Night of the World" with Alistair Brammer, who played Chris in the new production.

The gala performance was a tribute to the enduring legacy of Miss Saigon, which has played in 300 cities in 15 different languages, winning awards around the world. The show was created by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel SchÃnberg, the same team behind Les MisÃrables. The new production was directed by Laurence Connor, who also directed the 25th anniversary concert of Les MisÃrables at the O2 Arena in 2010.

If you are a fan of Miss Saigon, or if you want to discover this epic musical love story for the first time, you can watch the 25th anniversary gala performance on Broadway HD with Prime Video Channels[^4^]. You will be moved by the powerful performances, the stunning staging, and the unforgettable music of Miss Saigon.

The history of Miss Saigon is also a history of controversy and adaptation. The musical was inspired by a photograph of a Vietnamese mother leaving her child at a departure gate at Tan Son Nhut Air Base to board an airplane headed for the United States where the child's father, an ex-GI, would be in a position to provide a much better life for the child[^1^]. The composers, Claude-Michel SchÃnberg and Alain Boublil, decided to transpose the story of Puccini's opera Madama Butterfly to the Vietnam War, and create a musical that explores the end of the war through an ill-fated romance between a virginal Vietnamese bargirl and a hunky American G.I.

The musical premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, London, on 20 September 1989, and was an instant hit with audiences and critics. However, when the show was transferred to Broadway in 1991, it faced a fierce backlash from Asian-American activists, who protested against the casting of a white British actor, Jonathan Pryce, as the Engineer, a Eurasian character. They also criticized the show for portraying Asian women as submissive and exoticized victims, and Asian men as either villains or weaklings[^2^]. The protests sparked a heated debate about representation, racism and artistic freedom in the theater industry.

Despite the controversy, Miss Saigon opened on Broadway with Pryce in the lead role, after he agreed to drop the prosthetics and makeup that he had used in London. He won a Tony Award for his performance, as did Lea Salonga, who played Kim. The show ran for 4,092 performances on Broadway, becoming one of the longest-running shows in history. It also toured extensively around the world, and was revived in London in 2014 and on Broadway in 2017. Over the years, the show has made some changes to address some of the criticisms, such as casting only actors of Asian heritage as the Engineer, and adding more nuance and agency to Kim's character[
